Osmun Johnson had been warned repeatedly by the Modesto postmaster not to reuse postage stamps. In 1888, he reused two of these green 2-cent stamps of George Washington and was caught by the postmaster who reported the incident to postal authorities in San Francisco. Testimony by Johnson’s housekeeper led to his conviction and fine of $500.
